for only 2.5% of the State’s area of 88752 sq. km.
It experiences three seasonal spells – Hot Summer, Heavy
Rains and Cold Winters.

of 22.11% against the state average of 22.5% as per 2001

a vast reserve of human resource necessitating commercial

-
The district’s major economic activities primarily centre around
agricultural sector as more than 80% of the total workforce eke out
their living from this very sector.
The major crops are paddy, wheat, jute and pulses which offers,
scope for industrial exploitation.
Though the district is devoid of mineral resources, there is
enough potential to harness animal resource.
The milk production is substantially high enough for industrial
exploitation. The infrastructural facilities comprise a very good banking and telecom
network, road connectivity and newly contracted railway link with the
district’s H. Q. thus enable the district to enjoy economics of
scale. This is further compounded with newly developed two
industrial sides at Balurghat and Gangarampur.
Besides, the district being categorized as ‘C’ is eligible for subsidies and
incentives. However, the
growth of SSI sector is found halted barring food processing sector over the last 10 yrs.
This has happened so owing to lack of entrepreneurship among
the local people coupled with unawareness of market potentiality of
viable products, latest technology and various facilities available
for undertaking new ventures.
